French
Bonjour nos eleves de Ryvers!
What?
At Ryvers we strive to develop children’s love of learning about other cultures and new languages. Through the regular teaching of French, annual languages days, speaking French in our everyday routines and cross-curricular links with other subjects, we promote curiosity, problem solving skills and a deeper understanding of the people and cultures we share our world with. Children not only learn speaking and listening skills but also reading and writing, to enable them to use and apply French in a range of contexts and lay the foundations for the learning of languages in Higher Education.
We use the National Curriculum and draw upon the Chris Quigley subject specific essentials for MFL coverage and progression, but use the ‘Twinkl’ scheme to support the teaching of French. This scheme provides a supportive scaffold for our non-specialist teachers and help to develop subject knowledge, while the Chris Quigley milestones ensure we have progression and coverage for a curriculum that meets the needs of our children.
Why?
The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
-understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
-speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
-can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
-discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
Ryvers is a school rich in language. From the talk and oracy which features so prominently in lessons, to the bi-lingual and multi-lingual talents of the majority of the children and staff, the emphasis on language and effective communication is embedded across the school. The teaching and learning of French affords children an opportunity to learn a shared, common language beyond English or their home language or languages.
In line with our school vision, ‘Grow, Learn, Give’, we strive to ensure all children have additional opportunities to learn about other countries, while practising their linguistic skills.
We are very proud to teach French from Nursery to Year 6. We use a wide range of authentic resources in the lessons including story books, songs and rhymes with actions, visual aids and video clips.
Our main focus is to give the children the confidence to speak French in a variety of contexts. We endeavour to make our lessons fun and interactive whilst celebrating French language and culture.

French Day at Ryvers
In the past, we have had a ‘French Day’ in school where all children participated in activities that built on skills and knowledge of French-speaking countries and their customs. The children dressed up and enjoyed a taste of all things 'French' whilst learning key essentials, for example writing short sentences and phrases, using dictionaries, making comparisons and taking part in conversations.
